The El Martinez is a standard, but it’s usually made with gin instead of mezcal. But rules are made to be broken, right? With the sweetness of a Manhattan and the brightness of a Martini, this cocktail is a great, balanced choice for summer sipping.
1 1⁄2 ounces (45 ml) mezcal joven
1 ounce (30 ml) sweet vermouth, preferably Dolin
2 dashes Amaro Via or Angostura Aromatic Bitters
1 barspoon or teaspoon maraschino liqueur, preferably Luxardo
Lemon peel, with or without cherry in center, for garnish
In a mixing glass with ice, stir together the mezcal, vermouth, bitters, and maraschino liqueur until cold and well blended. Strain into a chilled cocktail or coupe glass. Garnish with lemon peel and serve.
